I was called to missions in 1970 while visiting Honduras on a work team. My husband, Paul, and I arrived in Honduras in 1980. Since the time we came to Honduras, we have served in pastoral ministries. At times we worked with national couples sharing the pastoral responsibilities. When Paul passed away three years ago, God confirmed to me that I should return and continue to work at the Camino a Damasco Church. I believe that the Christian life is, as Eugene Peterson puts it, “A long obedience in the same direction.” God has called me to serve Him in discipleship, leadership training, counseling ministries, and the preparation of Christian materials. People in Honduras as well as in other parts of the world are easily attracted to the Gospel message, but discipleship and spiritual formation are essential if they are to mature in spiritual things and run the race well. Several years ago I was able to start a new discipleship program for the church. Around 75 people have been involved in the program. We are now reaping the benefits from the program and have many new young leaders. Besides spiritual formation, we all need assistance from time to time. We need someone to listen to us, to love us, and to point us once again toward the Lord. God has given me a special vision for such counseling ministries. I do a lot of the counseling and pastoral visitation for the Camino a Damasco Church. Another recent project has been to author and publish a basic textbook on pastoral counseling. It is exciting to see how God is using this resource to train many of our pastors and leaders throughout Honduras. This project was possible because of a generous gift from the women of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Church. They completely underwrote the project. The sales of the books will go back into the fund to make funds available for more Christian materials. I also continue serve on the board of directors for Los Pinares Academy, where all three of my children have attended, my daughter and oldest son presently teach, and my oldest granddaughter attends. My greatest joy is seeing God change lives. It is special for me to have worked for many years in the same church. I have watched young people find the Lord, grow in Him, and become effective leaders in the church. Now many of them have begun their own families. I get to teach their little ones in the nursery Sunday School class. How fun! Not only am I grandma at church. I continue to enjoy my two granddaughters Kalei and Michelle who live next door and love to visit me. Kevin, is still at home, but he tells me that soon I will have a daughter-in-law. I’m looking forward to that, as Martha is a special girl that I have grown to love and appreciate so much. Chris is studying at Indiana Wesleyan University. He is enjoying his classes as well as new ministry opportunities. So God has been faithful to us as a family. We praise Him and pray that we might always be faithful to God and to the call that He has put on our lives.
