In 1978, as college students, we felt God leading us to get personally involved in a missions experience. God led us to Honduras where we spent 6 weeks at Escuela El Sembrador. During that summer mission experience, God confirmed His call on our lives. We finished our degrees and returned to Honduras as career missionaries with World Gospel Mission in 1982. We worked 18 years involved in ministry at Escuela El Sembrador. Angie was the school nurse, and Larry worked in agriculture. We had assumed that we would serve our entire careers at El Sembrador. Because of our love for the farm, we assumed that we would never work in a city setting. We were called to Choluteca in late 2000, nearly two years after Hurricane Mitch. At that time, there was still an emotional and economic depression on the region. Quality jobs were not available. Young people from the community where we were serving were not in school. We are currently part of a team of missionaries and Honduran pastors who are involved in church planting, education, recreation, health care, and economic community development. The region has four established congregations, and these congregations are working together to establish several other congregations. Our educational efforts involve theological education and adult night school, as well as a vocational training program. The health care involves both preventive health care, as well as curative health care. Angie, as a family nurse practitioner, is working with a local medical doctor in a clinic that provides extended care for patients. The clinic is focused towards poorer members of the community. We want to set up a recreation program for our churches. Our economic community development efforts are focused on establishing small businesses. Larry: My greatest joy in serving as a missionary in Honduras is seeing lives transformed. People who formerly lived lives immersed in sin are now serving the Lord with all their hearts. An example is Ruben. Ruben came to work with us as a laborer in the construction phase of our clinic. We often tend to look at the final result as our goal. In this case the process of the construction allowed us to reach out to Ruben. His mother has been a leader in the church, so Ruben had heard the gospel message from her. When he came to work in the construction of the clinic, that message was reinforced by the other men who were working with him. They continually shared Christ with Ruben through their words and backed their words up with testimonies. Ruben started attending worship services and soon accepted the Lord as his personal Savior. It is a joy to work alongside Ruben and to hear him singing about Christ all day long. Angie: I agree with Larry. Seeing someone's life transformed is a joy. Maricela is a friend who has changed from being a tough, caustic person to a lady who has a servant's heart. She is always ready to volunteer for any project or event at the church. We have three children, Rachel, David, and Maria, who were raised here in Honduras at El Sembrador. Our oldest daughter, Rachel, graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and is married to Jared Hoffman. They have our first two grandchildren, Quinn and Colin. Rachel and Jared are very involved in the local church. David was a year old when we came to Honduras. He graduated from Asbury College in exercise science and Spanish. David is working in the exercise science field and has been encouraging us to involve recreation as a ministry in Choluteca. Maria was born in Honduras and studied nursing at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is an RN in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Our children continually support our ministry in Honduras. They feel that Honduras is their home since they all grew up here. Even though they have spent little time in Choluteca, they have fallen in love with the people of southern Honduras just as we have.
