Why We Serve

We have been active in our home church through children’s ministries and helping with trustee and maintenance issues, but during family camp in 2004, we answered God’s call to full-time Christian ministry. Neither of us knew exactly what area God desired us to serve in, so we took the advice of Christian mentors and walked through the doors God had opened.

The first door led us to Vennard College (Iowa). Through this experience we fell in love with the college students and opened our home and hearts to these young adults. While studying at Vennard we had the privilege of going on two missions trips, one to Hungary and one to Honduras. While in Honduras we again felt God’s call, but this time the call was to become missionaries to Honduras.

We have been assigned to Escuela El Sembrador, a boarding school near Catacamas. It is truly amazing how God has orchestrated our lives. Although we do not have children, God has prepared us through attendance and ministry at Vennard to work with the young men at El Sembrador. We are both looking forward to seeing God work in amazing ways in the future and are ready to continue to walk through the open doors He provides.

Where We Serve

Escuela El Sembrador is a boarding school for underprivileged Honduran boys. Nestled in the Olancho valley about seven miles east of Catacamas, Honduras, El Sembrador was founded in 1954 by former WGM missionaries Donald and Twana Hawk. The primary purpose of the school has always been to teach the Word of God with love and a genuine concern for the boys.

Since the first class of 12 students in 1954, more than 6,000 students have been ministered to through El Sembrador’s primary, secondary, vocational, and Bible institute education programs. Many of these young people have become mechanics, lawyers, engineers, accountants, teachers, agriculturists, and pastors. The students at El Sembrador come from various backgrounds, but they are all in need of knowing Jesus and having a living relationship with Him.

What We Do

Gary: I teach automotive mechanics and assist with maintenance at the school and farm.

Laura: I teach English as a Second Language and help the school nurse.

Together, our primary role is to work with the young men, discipling them in the Christian faith. Our desire is for the young men at Escuela El Sembrador to see the one true and living God and want to have a personal relationship with Him.
